This module selects and explores several significant topics in science, technology and medicine from circa the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It contextualises the scientific and technological developments in the culture and society. Via interactive teaching, this module aims to inspire the students to appreciate, and critically analyse, the close yet ever-changing relationship between science and society.

By the end of the course the students should be able to:

  1. Get a historiographical overview of the period covered by the course
  2. think critically and express complicated ideas
  3. identify, collect and interpret primary and secondary sources
  4. develop independent arguments
  5. appreciate the notion of historical contingency in science and technology
  6. think outside the box
